Gorilla Conservation Efforts
Gorilla Conservation
All of the gorillas remaining in the
wild are at risk of extinction due to poaching and due to their
natural habitat being destroyed. Many humans are out there
doing all they can to protect the gorillas. They hope their
efforts will be enough to help them to survive with a high
quality of life. It isn’t easy to get such efforts out there on
a large scale though. It does take plenty of planning, time,
and of course money to accomplish all of it.
Teaching people about gorillas is very important. Too many
people in society have the vision that these are very brutal
animals with a thirst for consuming people. You can blame such
stereotypes of movies including King Kong that show them doing
lots of damage to everything in sight. With the right
information more people will want to join in the efforts to
protect gorillas.
In fact, many people will tell you that they didn’t realize
the gorillas were in such danger. They don’t live in areas
where gorillas are out there in the wild. The only time they
have seen them is at the zoo or possibly as part of a circus
act. However, once they realize that these animals need help
they are passionate about the cause.
Poaching is a huge problem in Africa when it comes to the
gorillas. Many villagers will kill them to prevent them from
consuming crops they have planted. Others will kill them for
their own survival as the meat of these animals will help to
feed plenty of hungry people in the villages.
The killing of the adults so that the younger gorillas can
be captured and sold is also a common practice. There is good
money on the black market to be made by doing so. Trying to get
the right security and law enforcement into action to prevent
poaching though is difficult. There simply aren’t enough
resources in Africa to help take care of such a growing
problem.
People are encouraged to report poaching and to help remove
traps that have been set in the forests for gorillas and other
animals. Still, most of the time the efforts of poachers aren’t
known until their careless acts of destruction have already
taken place.
Due to the migrational patterns of the gorillas, they need
plenty of room to roam. They are careful not to deplete an area
of the vegetation there. They never sleep in the same place
twice either. As more people are in Africa and the population
grows daily, the land that was once free for them gorillas to
explore is being taken away.
This is causing problems for them when it comes to finding
enough food to survive on. It also increases stress levels
among troop members. When they are stressed they will be less
likely to engage in the mating process. In order to offer a
future for gorillas in the wild, we need to protect those that
are alive and keep their habitats intact so that more offspring
can be part of their world.
There are definitely plenty of excellent conservation
efforts in place for the gorillas. They are part of the United
Nations Educational Program which means that a collaborative
effort from around the world is in place to protect them. In
2008 the Gorilla Agreement to specifically outline their
protection was introduced as well.
